Calwell

Calwell
/ˈkɔlwəl/ (say 'kawlwuhl)

noun
Arthur Augustus, 1896–1973, Australian Labor parliamentarian; leader of the ALP and the federal opposition 1960–67.
Arthur Calwell was elected to the House of Representatives as the member for Melbourne in 1940 and became minister for information in 1943 and minister for immigration in 1945. In the latter position he initiated a program that for the first time was based on large-scale non-British immigration from Europe. In 1960 he succeeded HV Evatt as Labor leader. He almost succeeded in defeating Menzies in the 1961 election, but in 1966 he led Labor to an overwhelming defeat (surviving an assassination attempt during the campaign) and retired as leader in 1967.
